FAQ

I signed a card for the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Doesn't that make me a member?

No. That card was only an information card that helped us get our election. To become an AFT member and secure the insurance protections, you must complete and submit the MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION.

Why should I join the AFT Local 6286?

It is a simple formula: membership numbers equal strength. Victor Valley College notices how many members we have. We need strength at the bargaining table as we negotiate our first contract.

How much are the dues?

Membership dues are $30 per pay period. The Fall and Spring Semesters may have 4-5 pay periods each, depending on where paydays fall in the calendar. Remember these dues are paid whether you are a member or not, since you are part of the bargaining unit as a whole. By joining and increasing our membership numbers, it increases our unity and strength during negotiations.

Do I owe dues when I'm not teaching at Victor Valley College?

No. You pay dues ONLY when you are employed at Victor Valley College.
